Terroirs

Originally conceived as a photographic story about harvest workers in South Africa’s Western Cape, Terroirs gradually evolved into a reflection on resilience, dignity and shared humanity.

While working in the vineyards of the Winelands, I became increasingly interested in the theatrical dimension of human action. Gestures repeated through labour, moments of concentration, cooperation and fatigue reveal a silent choreography shaped by experience and necessity.

The workers are not presented as anonymous figures within an agricultural process. They emerge as individuals whose presence transforms the landscape they inhabit and cultivate.

The vineyards, fields and mountains of the Winelands are more than a backdrop. They form an active stage upon which human effort, endurance and community become visible.

Through these photographs, Terroirs explores the relationship between people, work and place, revealing the humanity that persists within repetitive and demanding forms of labour.
